The term "Miniature Teacup Chihuhuas" is a bit of a misnomer since these dogs are simply miniaturized versions of the already diminutive Chihuahua. They are not a separate variety. These tiny dogs are undeniably cute though, and they remain popular with people who want to possess the ultimate small dog.
The following pages show just how small and puppy-like these dogs can be, and also point out a few facts of which every perspective owner should be aware.

Teacups are only a fraction of the size of normal Chihuahuas and, unfortunately, they sometimes have congenital defects due to their extreme down-sizing. This can include excessively large moleras (the natural open spot on the Chihuahua's skull) and eye problems.
Minis "Happen"

Although many breeders consider it unwise to breed specifically for these minis, they do pop up occasionally even in the most carefully bred lines.
Teacups Often Cost More

Some breeders tack on the term "teacup" in order to ask a higher price for a puppy. Perspective owners should be aware that all young Chihuahua pups are quite small, and it is difficult to predict which ones will be extremely small until the pups are older. Some people have purchased a "teacup" that eventually grew to average size.
Watch for Respiratory Illnesses

The especially tiny lung size of these miniaturized Chihuahuas makes them even more susceptible to respiratory illness than the average size Chihuahua.
Even More Fragile

Greater care is needed to protect these tiny dogs from accidental injury, especially if there are very young children or other pets in the home.

No Collars Please

Although the little Chi in this photo is being walked wearing a collar, it is actually safer to use a harness instead. That's because many of the very small breeds like Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers have delicate throats and are susceptible to collapsing tracheas.
What ''Every'' Chihuahua Needs

When all is said and done, it's important to remember that no matter which adjectives are used to describe a particular Chihuahua, they are all still Chihuahuas. They all deserve proper nutrition, good shelter, routine veterinary care and yes, love. If you can provide that, your pet should prosper.
